Christian Burnoski's earlier works deal with found lines, synchronicities, and collaborations. In Print Response, for example, a collaborative piece he began in 2007, invited 44 renown artists to alter a print of his. The lines making up the print image derives from leftover markings on scrap paper used for a previous artwork.
His work has increasingly focused on pointing to absence, with works that move between what is there and what is not. Part one of his ongoing series called Space Apart, appropriates the outer sections of artworks, making them diptychs that are separated according to the original width dimensions. The empty space between is a central component, physically and conceptually. His work overall is minimal, concise, and displays stark bold colors & blacks. He makes works in a variety of forms, including assembled objects, altered textiles, paintings, photographs, neon, and inkjet canvas prints.
Christian Burnoski was born 1979 in St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin USA. He studied at the Perpich Center for Arts Education in Minnesota and in 2002 received a Bachelor Degree in studio art from Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 2008 he moved to Berlin, Germany where he has worked as a studio assistant to and been mentored by British artist Jonathan Monk. He has exhibited widely both in Europe and the US, including at public institutions Museo Casa Ivan Bruschi in Arezzo, Italy, MOSTYN in Llandudno, Wales, and KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin, Germany.
